Unveiling the Silent Struggles: Exploring men's mental health issues with Reddit

Updated: Dec 3, 2024

As November wraps up, I thought it was the perfect time to use DeepPersona to explore some of the underlying factors behind men's health issues. To do this, I decided to dive into r/malementalhealth, a subreddit of over 51,000 members discussing men's mental health issues. To understand the most pressing topics and concerns within the community, I scraped the top posts from various time frames:

  • Daily Top 15

  • Weekly Top 60

  • Monthly Top 100

  • Yearly Top 350

  • All-Time Top 500

This approach gave me a dataset of 1,002 posts. After removing duplicates and posts without body text, I was left with 696 unique entries to analyze.

Using the ChatGPT-4o-latest model, I examined each post to extract key elements:

  • Underlying Need: The main reason behind the user's post.

  • Obstacles or Barriers: Factors preventing the user from fulfilling that need.

  • Implicit Needs or Desires: Unstated needs that might be inferred.

  • Urgency: A numerical estimation of the user's readiness to act (on a scale from 1 to 10).

  • Assumptions or Misconceptions: Incorrect beliefs or perceptions that could be addressed.

After cleaning and organizing the data, I grouped the posts based on their underlying needs, which I referred to as "representative pain points." Using a clustering algorithm, I clustered the painpoints, balancing the level of detail to minimize redundancy while maintaining meaningful distinctions. This process resulted in 26 clusters, each containing at least two posts.

Due to overlaps between some clusters, I used the ChatGPT-4o-latest model to maintain objectivity and consolidate them into overarching themes based on similarity, which resulted in the following groups:

  1. Emotional Support (n = 526): Emotional clarity (5 posts). Emotional healing (4 posts), Emotional regulation (2 posts), Emotional release (19 posts), Finding relatable therapist (2 posts), Support men emotionally (4 posts), Validation, emotional support (490 posts)

  2. Mental Health Awareness (n = 10): Mental clarity (2 posts), Mental health improvement (6 posts), Raise mental health awareness (2 posts)

  3. Societal Understanding (n = 9): Societal fairness (2 posts), Understanding male experience (3 posts), Understanding men's struggles (2 posts), Understanding societal issue (2 posts)

  4. Relationship Challenges (n = 7): Dating frustration (3 posts), Effective dating strategies (2 posts), Physical affection (2 posts)

  5. Validation and Fairness (n = 23): Validation of viewpoint (2 posts), Validation, connection (17 posts), Validation, fairnes (4 posts)

  6. Community Connection (n = 11): Community engagement (6 posts), Community validation (2 posts), Connection, understanding (3 posts)

  7. Other (n = 109): Other (102 posts), Research participation (5 posts), Self-discipline, accountability (2 posts)

To gain more nuanced insights, I conducted a keyword analysis within each theme. Given the varying sizes of the themes, I evaluated the most common keywords as a percentage of all keywords within its theme.

Loneliness and depression were significant keywords for emotional support, with many users describing their struggles with romantic relationships and general feelings of isolation. The high occurrence of the keyword "alone" and its urgency value of 8.14 indicate the depth of the loneliness issue in this community. The theme of Validation and Fairness emerged as particularly urgent, with many posts revolving around dating frustrations, self-esteem, and societal expectations. Keywords like "virgin" (Average Urgency: 8.5) and "unattractive" (Average Urgency: 8.0) highlight the struggles young men face in terms of feeling validated and accepted, both in romantic relationships and within society.

Interestingly, the Relationship Challenges theme revealed keywords like "cuddle" and "lonely" were more frequent then more explicit sex terms, showing that while physical intimacy was significant, many users seemingly more focused on companionship and emotional connection. This insight challenges some common stereotypes about men and their underlying desires in relationships.

To identify the most pressing issues, I compiled a list of the top 10 keywords based on average urgency across the entire dataset. These were all found in the Emotional Support category, which given the nature of the theme was not surprising. When exploring the posts in detail, it was clear that many of the users were in severe crisis, with discussions around suicide being alarmingly common.

Looking at some of the other themes, loneliness was one of the most urgent keywords for the majority of the themes. When taking a further look at posts to identify some of the barriers that these users were facing in their lives, the most common barriers or obstacles were isolation (10), followed by loneliness (4), reinforcing the findings from the most common keywords. The

The analysis of the r/MaleMentalHealth subreddit reveals several critical insights into the challenges faced by men:

  • Emotional Support and Validation are the most significant needs expressed by the community, with loneliness and self-esteem being the most pressing issues.

  • Relationship Challenges are complex, with many men seeking emotional and physical intimacy, but not necessarily in the way that societal stereotypes suggest.

  • There is a clear need for urgent mental health interventions, as evidenced by the high occurrence and urgency of terms related to self-harm and abusive situations.

While this analysis is just a snapshot of men's mental health concerns in one online community, it identifies some of the underlying issues and obstacles behind mens health. Based on these findings, the recurring issues and obstacles stem around feelings of loneliness and isolation, compounded by self-esteem issues around self-imagery and unmet intamacy needs.

Unfortunately, these issues are likely to get worse before they get better. While loneliness is commonly thought to effect older adults the most, it is the tech-savy young adults who report the highest levels, with over 40% of individuals 16-24 years old reporting that they feel lonely. Recent advancements in Artificial intelligence (AI) are likely to compound this problem, as the rapidly growing market for AI companions is becoming a growing threat to online dating and social media. While this used to be limited to the realm of science fiction, it has fast become a reality as young men turn to AI to fulfill romantic needs without fear of rejection or judgement.

Recently former Google executive Eric Schmidt discussed the threat of AI companions, with artifically perfect personalities and looks, distorting social expectations of young men. While these are designed to simulate companionship and intimacy, they risk creating unrealistic expectations about relationships. Unlike human interactions, AI companions are programmed to be endlessly patient, always agreeable, and tailored to meet the emotional needs of their users. For young men already struggling with self-esteem and loneliness, these artificial relationships may act as a comforting escape, but they are also likely to exacerbate the cycle of loneliness rather than alleviate it.

Presently, there are significant challenges to the regulation on AI. The race towards general artificial intelligence is an international one with any self-imposed regulation believed to slow down advancements and allow competing nations to gain a competitive advantage. As a result, it is almost certain that AI companions will only increase in sophistication and adoption.

With this in mind, it’s more important than ever to address the root causes of loneliness and self-esteem issues among men by fostering genuine human connection and providing meaningful support. Organizations dedicated to men’s mental health play a critical role in this effort, offering resources and services to help those in need. If you’d like to make a difference, consider donating to men’s health initiatives and supporting programs that tackle these challenges head-on. Together, we can help create a future where no one has to face these struggles alone.
